Brazilian universities to go solar under new govt programme
October 30 – Brazil’s Ministry of Mines and Energy, together with the Ministry of Education, will launch a solar distributed generation programme for the country’s federal universities.
The announcement was made by minister Eduardo Braga on Thursday. The goal of the programme is to install solar roofs in the federal universities parking lots to reduce energy consumption and make them self-sufficient or even suppliers of surplus power to the National Interconnected System (SIN).
The new measures are part of several energy efficiency projects being planned by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, said the minister. The Brazilian Development Bank, or BNDES, and the Ministry of Science and Technology will also support the initiative.
Brazil’s public technical schools are also being considered as part of the programme, not only for the installation of solar panels but also for the creation of laboratories and courses on photovoltaic (PV) generation, noted Braga.
