Bosch to demonstrate renewables-based microgrid in California

March 19 – A team led by Bosch has been awarded a bit over USD 2.8 million (EUR 2.6m) by the California Energy Commission to demonstrate a commercial-scale microgrid using renewable energy.

The North American unit of the German industrial group said on Wednesday that its direct-current (DC) building-scale microgrid platform will be deployed at a parts distribution centre of American Honda Motor Co Inc. The DC microgrid will connect rooftop photovoltaic (PV) arrays to energy-efficient DC lighting, DC ventilation and DC energy storage systems on a 380-volt DC bus.

Bosch says the platform provides a cost-efficient way for commercial buildings to become zero-net-energy users.

Oliver Steinig, Robert Bosch LLC vice president of business development, said the microgrid system would increase the reliability and usage of distributed renewable energy and improve the energy efficiency of technologies such as LED lighting with advanced lighting controls by operating them on DC power, thus contributing to California’s carbon reduction and energy efficiency goals.

The project will start once the contract with the California Energy Commission has been signed and will be completed by February 2018. Bosch and its partners will provide USD 1.8 million in in-kind and matching funds.
