Abengoa reaches commercial ops at 50-MW S African solar tower
February 8 – Spanish group Abengoa (MCE:ABG) said Friday the 50-MW Khi Solar One concentrating solar power (CSP) plant in South Africa is now operating commercially.
Abengoa developed the project with South Africa-based development finance group Industrial Development Corp (IDC) and the Khi Community Trust. The Spanish firm holds a 51% stake, while its partners have 29% and 20%, respectively.
The solar thermal super-heated tower, construction of which began in November 2012, also has two hours of thermal storage capacity. Abengoa said the park can meet the needs of 45,000 local households. It sells its output to utility Eskom under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA).
Abengoa, IDC and Kaxu Community Trust also operate a parabolic trough plant in South Africa — Kaxu Solar One, and are developing another 100-MW parabolic trough plant — Xina Solar One. The latter will have five hours of storage. The partners secured USD 660 million (EUR 593m) in non-recourse financing for it in March 2015.
