UK solar group calls for removal of barriers to storage

January 16 – The UK Solar Trade Association (STA) has urged the UK government to remove all barriers to energy storage in its response to energy regulator Ofgem’s call for evidence on the development of a smart energy system.
The organisation said that the call for evidence, which closed last week, has identified a number of barriers such as the lack of a regulatory definition for storage and the resulting double charging on energy consumption levies.
The STA, however, also said that Ofgem’s current review of the charges for use of the distribution network “is dampening the price signals” for storage developers. The association further thinks that distribution network operators are not sufficiently incentivised to purchase storage and other flexible services when balancing or reinforcing their networks.
“We need more open markets for flexibility services at distribution level, stronger buy-in from network operators and stronger direction from government in implementing these,” said Nick Wood, STA policy analyst.
The STA also called for stronger standards for the installation of solar systems to support consumer confidence at the residential level.
According to a STA-commissioned report released last year, a high deployment of solar in the future in the UK would come with a net economic benefit when combined with storage (http://renewables.seenews.com/news/integrating-solar-not-costly-uk-lobby-group-says-541962).
