Miami Heat stadium gets Onyx Solar PV glass

March 4 – Onyx Solar said on Thursday that the American Airlines Arena, home of the Miami Heat basketball team, has obtained the LEED Gold certification following the installation of photovoltaic (PV) glass at the entrance of the building.
The building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) materials company has supplied about 300 crystalline silicon PV glass units, made entirely to measure for the occasion. They were placed in 14 circular skylights as part of a project that creates a new 26,000-sq-ft (2,415-sq-m) covered space for events.
The PV glass units allow the stadium to produce some 34,500 kWh of solar power per year for on-site consumption. They also help reduce heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) energy demand by up to 44%.
Onyx noted that this is the first sports and entertainment centre to get the LEED Gold certification, which is the highest standard of sustainability for a building.
