Jordan awards 100-MW solar job to Spain’s TSK UAE partner
December 21 – TSK of Spain and a partner from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will build a 100-MW solar power plant in Jordan, energy minister Ibrahim Saif said at a press conference on Sunday.
The deal for the construction of the USD-128-million (EUR 118m) plant has been signed with the Spanish engineering and construction firm and Enviromena Power Systems. Located in Al Qweira, southern Jordan, the solar park will be owned by the government. It will be funded with a grant from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
Enviromena Power Systems chief executive Sami Khoreibi told The Jordan Times that the 100-MW solar project was due to enter construction in the first quarter of next year and to be completed by the end of 2017.
The project supports Jordan’s goal of increasing the share of renewables in its energy mix to 10% by 2020. The energy minister said that the country would also see the launch of several solar and wind project in 2016 and that 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity would be connected to the grid by end-2018.
Last week, South Korean state-run utility Korea Electric Power Corp (KEPCO) announced it will build and operate an 89.1-MW wind farm in Jordan.
