Apple to go 100% renewable in Singapore

November 16 – The Singapore-based Sunseap Group of companies will be supplying solar electricity to US technology giant Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) so it could power 100% of its local operations in the Asian nation with renewables.

Beginning in January 2016, Sunseap will be generating 33 MW of solar power for Apple at rooftop arrays installed on over 800 buildings in Singapore and totalling 50 MW, Reuters reported.

Sunseap said in a press release on its website that it came up with a special solution for Apple, mixing on-site rooftop solar leasing of 1.1 MWp with up to 40 GWh worth of clean energy to be supplied through an off-site power purchase agreement (PPA). The group added that this long-term contract makes the iPhone and iPad manufacturer the first company in Singapore to be powered entirely with renewable energy.

“This deal will cover all of our electricity needs in Singapore, including our 2,500-person corporate campus and new retail store,” said Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives.

The move aligns with Apple’s objective to meet all of its power needs worldwide with renewables. In October, the company unveiled a clean energy push in China, planning to build 200 MW of solar capacity and to partner with its local suppliers for 2 GW of clean energy in the coming years.
