India eyes 250 GW solar in 2030 under 40% renewables plan – report

September 22 – The Union Cabinet in India is expected to decide on Wednesday whether to approve a target of at least 40% renewable power capacity by 2030, which includes a commitment for 350 GW of solar and wind.

The government will determine tomorrow India’s targets for the Paris climate change agreement. Government sources told the Business Standard that the aggressive renewables target proposal has been prepared by the power and environment ministries and is expected to be sanctioned by the Cabinet.

The green energy goal for 2030 includes 250 GW of solar and 100 GW of wind power, building on the 100-GW solar and 60-GW wind targets already set for 2022. The expansion of the country’s hydro and nuclear capacity, meanwhile, will be much more modest. Hydropower is seen to grow by just 15 GW and nuclear power will increase from about 6 GW now to some 16 GW by 2030, the newspaper said, cited a source involved in the preparation of the climate change proposal.

India’s Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) under the Paris agreement will include a commitment to cut by 35% below 2005 levels the greenhouse gas emission intensity of its economy by 2030. The government is seen to formally submit the INDC document in the coming week, according to the report.
