NextEra SunEdison RES qualify 1.4 GW for Ontario tender

August 26 – About 1,400 MW of projects proposed by units of NextEra Energy (NYSE:NEE), Renewable Energy Systems (RES) and SunEdison (NYSE:SUNE) have qualified for Ontario’s Large Renewable Procurement (LRP) programme.
The Canadian province’s Electricity System Operator (IESO) on Tuesday released the list of 119 projects that will compete for power contracts under the 565-MW LRP programme. The final proposals are due by September 1, 2015.
A local subsidiary of NextEra has qualified with nine projects totalling 590 MW, including 190 MW of non-rooftop solar and 400 MW of onshore wind. Renewable Energy Systems Canada Inc has registered 495 MW for the tender and a unit of SunEdison joined with 310 MW.
In terms of capacity, the largest project to qualify is NextEra’s 200-MW Northpoint II Wind Energy Centre in the township of Addington Highlands.
The list of companies also includes BluEarth Renewables Inc, Innergex Renewable Energy Inc and Invenergy LLC, as well as subsidiaries of EDF EN, EDP Renewables and GDF Suez, among others.
IESO launched this competitive process to identify up to 300 MW of wind, 140 MW of solar, 50 MW of bioenergy and 75 MW of hydropower. Each project should be larger than 500 kW. JoAnne Butler, vice-president of market and resource development for the IESO, commented that projects that can demonstrate community support “have a much better chance of getting a contract”.
The competitive procurement programme was launched after Ontario cancelled its feed-in tariff (FiT) scheme in 2013.
