Duke Energy seeks 53 MW of fresh utility-scale solar in S Carolina

August 21 – US utility Duke Energy Corp (NYSE:DUK) wants 53 MW of new utility-scale solar power capacity to be hooked to the grid in its South Carolina service areas by the end of next year.

The company has issued a request for proposals (RfP) as part of its Distributed Energy Resource Programme that was cleared by the Public Service Commission (PSC) in mid-July. Bidders in this RfP can offer a power purchase agreement (PPA) to Duke or make a proposal through which the company would end up with control over the planned capacity. Each project should be sized between 1 MW and 10 MW.

Furthermore, Duke has issued a separate RfP for up to 5 MW of solar capacity for its Shared Solar Programme that allows customers to subscribe to the output of a specific solar system. The projects in this RfP should be between 250-kW and 1 MW.

The deadline for these RfPs is set for mid-October.

Meanwhile, Duke’s customers in South Carolina will be able to sign up for rooftop rebates starting on October 13. This is part of a new programme for rooftop or ground-mounted solar arrays up to 1 MW, installed after January 1, 2015.
