Brazil’s Sao Paulo not to hold renewables auction – report
July 17 – Brazil’s Sao Paulo state has decided not to conduct its own renewable energy auction, as there is no need for regional contracting of new energy sources, reports news website Canal Energia.
The decision reflects developments in the national electricity sector that is currently promoting the inclusion of all generation sources, energy secretary Joao Carlos Meirelles said after his participation in the opening of Enersolar+Brasil 2015 on Wednesday.
Therefore, Sao Paulo’s government has chosen to continue purchasing power only for public buildings such as schools, hospitals and prisons, directly on the market.
The idea for stimulating particular energy sources in Sao Paulo dates back to late 2013 when the state of Pernambuco held its solar power auction. The expectation was for the state to purchase that energy as soon as 2014, contracting projects that still needed incentives in the country, including biogas, solid waste and solar energy.
