Brazil’s Maranhao state to map renewable power potential
June 12 – The government of Brazil’s Maranhao state signed a partnership agreement with the Federal University of Maranhao (UFMA) to research and map potential areas for wind, solar and marine power development.
The one-year project will be executed by UFMA’s Institute of Electrical Energy and the state’s Department of Mines and Energy. The main goal is to provide accurate assessment of the state’s renewable energy potential.
At total, the project will focus on four areas, namely wind-solar mapping, mapping of marine energy potential and the use of solar photovoltaic energy in family farming.
According to professor Osvaldo Saavedra, head of UFMA’s Institute of Electrical Energy, this partnership is very needed due the fact that to this day it is not clear what is Maranhao’s wind potential. The same goes for the state’s ocean energy resource, which the professor says is one of the best in the country.
