Works under the right soil conditions, April 1, 2010

I bought one of these solar powered spikes in the spring of 2009, but had to exchange the first one because it didn’t work. But I’ve been pretty satisfied with the results in deterring voles in my garden. The harder/denser the soil, the better it works, as the sonic vibrations do not travel well through loamy soil conditions. As long as I don’t put too much mulch on my garden it keeps the voles away. It is now April 2010 and it is still going strong. During the winter I had about 18 inches of snow on the ground for weeks and was concerned that the rechargeable solar battery would completely discharge. So I went out and uncovered the snow on top of the spike, and to my surprise it was still working! It actually continued to be recharged by the sun through a foot and a half of snow! I really didn’t expect it to last this long, so if it does finally die I’ll probably buy another one. I really dislike using chemicals to deter moles and voles so for me this was just the ticket. Just be careful when you place it in the ground as it has a plastic housing that could break if too much force is exerted. I recommend making a hole first with a metal or wooden stake, just make sure it is snug in the dirt so the sonic vibrations are transmitted to the soil.

Seems to Work, July 13, 2010

I have moles. I have ankle rolling hills and valleys in my yard and have tried poisons and traps. Seems like I can never put the trap over a active mound long enough as they will produce 4 or 5 new trails overnight. I bought these despite what I would call variable reviews. Since placing them on each side of my yard I have not seen one new trail. Is this because of the sonic repeller or because I also tried to eliminate a food source (grub killer) or have seen a couple of snakes on the property, Im not sure. However, I recently ran over one with the lawnmower (whoops I forgot I had it on the lowest setting), and came back to purchase another. Prices are highly variable across the internet and in stores, and may be better during colder months.

I would not place in a high traffic area, though this seems to be where I have most of my mole problem. Ive accidently stepped on mine a couple times and I hear an uncomfortable “crack” when Ive done it.

Internally (since I hit it with the mower), basically its a solar panel housing a couple of AA batteries, with a wire down the hollow plastic spike to a small noise generator. I used the broken end of a broom handle to create the hole in my clay soils before placing this item inside as too much force and the item will crack.

Bought 5 of these and 3 have already quit working in 1 months time. I couldn’t return to Amazon, but the manufacturer backed up their “Satisfaction Guaranteed” warranty and shipped replacement units. Amazon seems to use the best sellers so far as standing behind their products.
